LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah softball team (4-5-1) served up the long ball in topping Seton Hall (0-6), 10-0, on the final day of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic here in Las Vegas this morning.
"What's happening is we are starting to apply what we practice every time we approach the plate here in the game," said head coach Angie Jacobs. "And, as a result, we are starting to be more successful.
"Overall, I thought that our pitching was outstanding this weekend. All three of our pitchers did very well. It was also nice to see Hailey Davenport gain confidence at the plate and to see Staci Hemingway be aggressive with the bat.
"We finished this weekend strong. We'll take what we've learned here into practice this week and build upon it for next weekend in El Paso."
Utah belted three homers in the victory, two of which came from the bat of sophomore Hailey Davenport. She smacked a solo homer in the third and hit a towering two-run shot in the fourth.
Davenport's homer in the fourth sparked a five-run, six-hit inning that lifted Utah to the 10-run win.
Staci Hemingway also hit a round-tripper. She followed Davenport's in the third for back-to-back home runs. The Utes finished the afternoon smacking 10 hits around the park.
Karina Cannon got the win in holding SHU to just two hits. She fanned 10 in five innings of work. She improved to 1-2 on the year.
Utah returns to action next weekend at the UTEP Invitational in El Pason, Texas. There it plays Wisconsin, UTEP, Northern Colorado and Buffalo.
