LAS VEGAS, Nev. - A pair of three-run home runs lifted the University of Utah softball team to a 9-1 win in five innings over California-Riverside in Utah's final game of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic here in Las Vegas, Nev., this afternoon. The win snaps a two-game slide for the Utes.
Veteran hurler Brianna Gourdin (2-1) picks up the win in pitching all five innings. She struck out three, walked two and allowed only four hits on the afternoon.
It took one swing of the bat for Utah to wrangle away UCR's one-run lead. In the top of the third, with two on, Ivette Hernandez parked a long-distance shot over the right field fence, giving the Utes a 3-1 lead.
The Highlanders threatened in both the first and second innings, following through with the game's first score in the second. UCR had runners on the corners when a bloop single off of Kristen Dufrene's bat allowed Jessica Black to trot home from third to make it 1-0.
The Utes return to action next weekend at the Campbell/Cartier Tournament in San Diego.
