LAS CRUCES - The same defense that surrendered seven runs earlier this afternoon held New Mexico State to a single run as the University of Utah softball team rallied for its first win of the season on Friday afternoon.
The Utes raced past NMSU, 3-1, in their second game of the Hilton Las Cruces Classic.
Utah (1-1 overall) spotted the Aggies a one-run lead in the second inning. But, the Utes knotted it at one in the fourth and plated two runs in the fifth capture the lead.
Diana Phillips led the offensive outburst as she went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Her two hits went for a double and a triple.
Phillips got the offense started in the fourth with a leadoff double. After advancing to third on Jessica Shiery's groundout to second, a two-out double by Devina Quintero evened the score at one apiece.
While that was all Utah had in the fourth, it returned in the fifth to plate its last two runs of the game. Phillips followed Jackie Wong's single with an RBI triple to plate the game-winning run. The insurance run came from the bat of Ivette Hernandez who singled to left field, scoring Phillips.
The Utes banged out nine hits in scoring three runs while their opponents only scattered three shots across the field.
New Mexico State (1-1 overall) nearly broke the 1-1 tie in the top part of the fifth inning. Rishelle Gastelum tried to score from second with one out on a fielding error. But, Quintero in right field pegged the would-be scorer at the plate.
The Ute defense centered around Karina Cannon. She went all seven innings in the circle and struck out four while allowing only three hits, one walk and an earned run. She improves to 1-0 on the season.
Utah returns to the diamond for its third and fourth games of the Hilton Las Cruces Classic on Saturday. First up is Portland State at 9 a.m., and Texas-San Antonio at 11:30 a.m.
