SALT LAKE CITY - Idaho State made all five of its penalty kicks while goalkeeper Shannon Boyle denied Utah once to eliminate the Utes in the first round of the NCAA Championship on a rainy, cold afternoon here Thursday.
The game officially ended in draw with Idaho State (10-8-2) advancing to face BYU in the second round on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Ute Field. Utah (16-2-2) ended its season in the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year, advancing to the second round in 2002.
Utah battled to its second postseason shootout in a week's time against Idaho State, the Big Sky Conference Tournament champions. The Utes got past UNLV in the semifinals of the Mountain West Tournament in a shootout 6-5 last Thursday at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
The Utes weren't as fortunate this time around, finishing the game in dreary conditions to decide which team would move on to the second round. Missy Dennis and Heather Wilhelm-Carter scored to the left side of the net before Tracy Stratton's attempt was denied by Boyle, who made 12 saves in regulation. Ester Imotan and Julie Herdic both scored to keep the Utes close, but Heather Jones got the final kick past Ute keeper Ashley Mason low to the right side to give ISU a 5-4 advantage.
The Utes had numerous scoring opportunities, but were unable to convert. Utah outshot the Bengals 24-3 and had an 8-3 edge in cornerkicks.
Amanda Feigt fired four shots on goal and Amber Brower had three. Brower had a wide-open shot that sailed over the crossbar with 1:36 remaining in the first overtime. Lauren Field missed an attempt high with 9:30 remaining in regulation.
The Utes pressured Boyle heavily 63 minutes in, started by a corner from Dennis. However, shots from Dennis and Benegas less than 10 seconds apart that were saved by and went off the post, respectively.
Utah finished its most successful season in school history with a record 16 wins. The Utes also went 6-0 in Mountain West Conference play to win its first outright league title and captured the MWC Tournament title.
