Utah won the Mountain West Conference Championship last weekend at Rice-Eccles Stadium, defeating BYU 2-0 in the final. The Utes, ranked No. 17 in the NSCAA/adidas poll, went 6-0 to win the Mountain West regular-season title. Rich Manning has taken the Utah program to new heights during his two-year tenure, posting a 29-6-4 record. Utah is 9-0-1 at home this season, including an 8-0 mark at Ute Field.
Colorado is one of the 16 seeded teams in the tournament at No. 10 and won the Big 12 Conference regular-season title. BYU is the Mountain West Conference runner-up, receiving one of the 35 at-large bids. Idaho State won the Big Sky Conference Tournament last weekend in Ogden, Utah.
After making their first-ever NCAA appearance in 2002, Utah is hosting first and second round games for the first time. Last season in Provo, Utah, the Utes defeated BYU 3-2 in overtime in the first round before falling to Portland in the second round.
"We're real happy to be in again, that's the most important thing," said Manning. "The fact that we get to host, it's nice that our program has risen to the point in results in support that the NCAA has recognized that we're able to host. Hopefully we'll be able to focus in on Thursday's game with Idaho State first and go from there."
