Utah senior outside hitter Kathryn Haynie earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII First Team for the second time in her career.

SALT LAKE CITY - Senior Utah outside hitter Kathryn Haynie, of the No. 24 University of Utah volleyball team, earned CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII First-Team honors, the organization announced Thursday.
As a first-team selection, Haynie will be placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America honor for the second consecutive season.
Haynie, who is majoring in pre-pharmacy, became the 11th member of Utah's 1,000-kill club against UNLV on Oct. 9. Haynie is second on the Utah squad this season with 2.83 kills per set and she leads the team or tied for the team lead in kills in 10 matches this season and has tied for the team lead in digs seven times this season. She also leads Utah with 25 service aces. Haynie has set career-highs with five service aces in a single match against Santa Clara and tied a career high with six blocks against Florida Gulf Coast Sept. 6.
Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, an organization of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
To be eligible, student-athletes must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his or her current institution and be nominated by his or her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
Utah (17-5, 9-2 MWC) closes out its regular-season road slate this weekend at San Diego State and UNLV. First serve for the match against the Aztecs will take place Thursday at 7 p.m. MDT. Saturday's match with the Rebels will begin at 2 p.m. MDT.
