COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah claimed its third outright and second consecutive regular-season Mountain West Conference women's soccer title with a 2-0 win over San Diego State on Oct. 22. The victory over the Aztecs also earned the Utes (14-4-0 overall, 7-0-0 MWC) the No. 1 seed in this week's MWC Women's Soccer Championship in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Utes closed out the season defeating Wyoming 2-0 on Friday, Oct. 27.
BYU finished in second-place with a 13-2-3 overall and 4-1-2 league record. UNLV (8-10-1 overall, 3-4-0 MWC) and New Mexico (8-6-4, 2-2-3) tied for third place in the standings, but the Rebels will get the third seed after defeating UNM 1-0 (OT) earlier in the season. San Diego State (6-11-2 overall), 2-3-2 MWC) and Wyoming (7-8-3, 2-3-2 MWC) shared the fifth spot in the standings, with the Aztecs claiming the fifth seed after defeating the Cowgirls 2-0 in the regular season.
The conference tournament will take place Nov. 1-4 at Ute Field on the campus of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. The opening match will see No. 3 UNLV vs. No. 6 Wyoming at 4:30 p.m. MT on Wednesday, Nov. 1. The other Wednesday match will include No. 4 seed New Mexico vs. No. 5 seed San Diego State at 7 p.m. MT. No. 1 seed Utah and No. 2 seed BYU will have first-round byes and will play in the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7 and 4:30 p.m. MT, respectively.
The Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Championship match is slated for noon on Saturday, Nov. 4, with the winner receiving an automatic bid into the 2006 NCAA Women's College Cup.
The MWC Women's Soccer Championship semifinal rounds will be televised live at 4:30 and 7 p.m. on the mtn. Saturday's championship game will be aired via tape delay nationally on CSTV Saturday, Nov. 4 at 9 p.m. MT.
All-session tickets for the MWC Soccer Championship are on sale at the Utah Athletics Ticket Office at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Single-session tickets will be available during the tournament at the Ute Field Ticket Office, which will open one hour prior to the first game each day.
