SALT LAKE CITY - Utah senior goalkeeper Ashley Mason and sophomore forward Adele Letro have earned national honors after leading the Utes to wins over UNLV and BYU last week. Mason was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week, while Letro was placed on the Soccer Buzz Team of the Week.
Letro, a native of Davis, Calif., scored Utah's lone goals in a pair of 1-0 victories over UNLV and No. 15 BYU to open conference play. She now has six goals on the season to lead the Mountain West Conference.
Letro scored in the 36th minute against UNLV and got the game-winning goal in the 16th minute against BYU. It was only the sixth goal in 13 games BYU's Erika Woodbury had allowed all season.
Mason, a Sunnyvale, Calif., native, had a total of nine saves in a pair of 1-0 wins over UNLV and BYU. In the UNLV game, Mason had five saves, including two critical ones in the second half as the Utes were protecting the lead.
Against BYU, Mason made four saves, cut off through balls and organized a defense that was under pressure from the Cougars during the entire second half. Over the weekend, Mason extended her shutout streak to three games and now has four on the season as well as 25.5 for her career, a Ute record.
