News and Notes
This Weekend's Action
Utah soccer (4-1-5) continues Pac-12 play with home contests against Oregon on Friday evening and Oregon State on Sunday afternoon. This completes a five-week homestand for the Utes that has seen them go undefeated.
Utes Open Pac-12 Play with Draw
Utah soccer began the conference portion of its schedule with a scoreless tie against No. 11 Cal last Friday at Ute Field. The Utes now stand at 4-1-5 on the season and remain unbeaten at home this season.
In the second overtime, Utah came closest to breaking the deadlock as Katie Rigby had a try go wide before Kaycee Buckley, kept onside by a Cal defender that had slipped on the far side of the field, had a try go awry. Allie Wisner had a chance blocked out of bounds when a Cal defender closed her down and collided with the senior.
Seven-Match Home Unbeaten Streak on the Line This Weekend
Utah comes into this weekend carrying a seven-match unbeaten streak which started last season with a 3-1 victory over Oregon. Since the contest, Utah is 4-0-3 while out-scoring its opponents 19-6 and posting three shutouts.
Since joining the Pac-12 Utah is 17-4-3 at home with the only losses coming against No. 2 Stanford, No. 6 UCLA, Cal and a non-conference tilt to Nevada.
Utes Listed at No. 8 in Pacific Region
In Monday's NSCAA regional rankings, the Utes improved to No. 8 in the Pacific Region, its highest mark of the season. Utah also owns a top-50 RPI, one of seven Pac-12 schools to be ranked that high. The last time Utah was ranked in the final NSCAA Poll was in 2006 when the Utes finished 23rd in the country.
Utes Off to Best Start Since 2003
With only one loss through its first 10 games, Utah is off to its best start since the 2003 season when it started 9-1 and went on to finish with 16 wins and a Mountain West Conference championship.
With 18 goals in 10 games, Utah has posted its best offensive start to a season since 2009. At this point during that season, Utah had scored 19 goals. (5 in 2010, 12 in 2011, 14 in 2012).
Utes Rank Among Pac-12's Best Defenses
The Utes are allowing less than one goal per game (0.60) and have a team goals-against average of 0.54 (6 GA in league-high 1,000 minutes). Utah goalkeepers have made 48 saves, tops in the Pac-12 and notched six shutouts.
In the six games she has played, goalkeeper Lindsey Luke has allowed one goal during 620 minutes of game action. This means the sophomore leads the league in goals-against average at 0.15 and save percentage at .960.
Cheyanne Mulcock started four games for the Utes and ranks seventh in the league with a 0.75 GAA. She notched her first shutout of the season in a blanking of Weber State.
Nine Different Utes Find the Net
Utah has had nine different players score goals this season: Katie Taylor leads the way with four, Baylee Nielsen and Allie Wisner are tied with three goals apiece, Ashton Hall and Avery Ford have each bagged a pair and Ali Forsberg, Jenny Hutton, Taylor Slattery and Kaycee Buckley have all tallied once. Taylor, Nielsen, Wisner and Slattery have all knocked in game-winners for the Utes while the goals for Forsberg, Buckley and Slattery were the first of their careers.
Oregon Ducks (2-4-3, 0-0-1)
The Ducks played to a scoreless draw last weekend against Washington State, its third straight double-overtime contest. Oregon has now gone to extra time in four games this season with three of those contests coming against opponents ranked or receiving votes in the NSCAA Continental Tire Poll. Junior goalkeeper Abby Steele made six saves and was Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week last month after shutting out No. 6 BYU. Offensively, the Ducks have scored nine goals in nine games with three players notching a pair.
The All-Time Series
Utah is 6-1-1 all-time against Oregon, including a perfect 4-0-0 record at Ute Field. Last season in SLC, Katie Taylor, Allie Wisner and Kaycee Buckley all scored in a 3-1 victory over the Ducks. It was the first meeting between the teams at Ute Field in five seasons. Utah went to Eugene in 2011 and captured a 2-0 shutout victory in its inaugural match as a member of the Pac-12 Conference.
Oregon State Beavers (2-6-2, 0-0-1)
OSU also earned a draw to open league play, battling to a 1-1 tie against Washington. The Beavers jumped out to an early lead thanks to sophomore 's first goal of her career which came off a free kick. Oregon State has scored eight goals in 10 games this season with Jenna Richardson and Chelsea Buckland each bagging a pair. The Beavers' wins have come against Texas and Cal Poly with the other draw being against Wisconsin.
Utah is 1-3 all-time against Oregon State with the only victory coming in SLC during the 2011 season. The Utes won the matchup in thrilling fashion, taking down the 18th-ranked Beavers, 1-0 in overtime. Erin Dalley scored the game winner on a header off a corner kick from Ashton Hall. Last season in Corvallis, the Beavers blanked Utah 2-0 on a brace by Jenna Richardson.
UCLA was selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2013 regular season Pac-12 title. The 2012 Conference runner-ups collected 117 points and 7-of-11 possible first-place votes. Four-time defending Conference champion Stanford was a close second, tallying 115 points.
Behind them were California (99), Washington (77), Arizona State (74), Oregon State (70), Washington State (70), USC (65), Utah (37), Colorado (27), Oregon (21) and Arizona (15).
