News and Notes
This Weekend's Action
The University of Utah soccer team (2-1-2) tries to continue its winning ways when it hosts UC Davis and Weber State this weekend. The Utes, coming off a six-goal outburst in a win over Southern Utah welcomes the Aggies on Friday at 7:30 p.m. before the Wildcats come to town on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Utes Smash Southern Utah
Utah soccer opened the 2013 home slate with an emphatic 6-2 win over Southern Utah on Sunday afternoon. Five different players scored as the Utes enjoyed their highest scoring output since the 2009 home opener.
Katie Taylor scored her first two goals of the season, while Jenny Hutton added four points on a goal and two assists. Ashton Hall tallied the first goal of the game and assisted on Hutton's score. Baylee Nielsen scored her team-leading third goal of the season and Allie Wisner notched her first goal of the 2013 season. Ali Forsberg collected her second assist of the season, while Megan Trabert notched her first collegiate helper and Katie Rigby scored her first point as a Ute.
Scouting this Weekend's Opposition
UC Davis Aggies
UC Davis dropped two games last weekend, 1-0 at San Francisco and 4-0 at No. 18 Cal.
Prior to that, senior midfielder Ashley Edwards, a Preseason All-Big West choice, and senior forward Mary Beth Mazurek earned spots on the Pacific Classic's All-Tournament Team, for their performances against Iowa and Drake. Edwards scored the game-winner against the Bulldogs. Junior goalkeeper Taylor Jern received the inaugural Big West Defensive Player of the Week award for the 2013 season on Aug. 26, after notching her second career shutout in the Causeway Cup match vs. Sacramento State.
Weber State Wildcats
Weber State could not earn a victory last weekend but battled in a scoreless draw at Boise State and a 1-0 loss to Washington State. Junior midfielder Mackenzie Day, who missed half of last season after suffering a knee injury, currently leads Weber State with two goals and four total points. Sophomore defender Marissa Yamane earned the assist on Day's match-winner against Utah Valley, her first collegiate point. Sophomore forward Stacy Bair's three points (one goal, one assist) rank second on the team. Senior goalkeeper Ryann Waldman has only allowed three goals in five games.
The All-Time Series
This will be Utah's first meeting against UC Davis but the Utes are 12-4-4 all-time, 6-1-2 at home, against teams from the Big West Conference. The Utes played to a draw at league favorite Cal State Fullerton and the Aggies were selected eighth in the preseason prognostications.
Robison Excels in New Role
Junior defender Jill Robison was named to CollegeSoccer360's Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll on Aug. 27. The Layton native was a forward last season for the Utes and started 16 games. However, she moved to a defensive role during the offseason and has flourished.
Robison has provided a steady presence in all three games this season, providing link-up play to the midfielders and forwards while adding an assist against WKU.
Experienced Group of Utes
Utah returns every single player that scored a goal or recorded an assist in 2012. That experience should benefit the Utes throughout the season. Utah had 10 players score goals last year and 19 different Utes started in the second Pac-12 season for the club.
Utah defender Avery Ford was selected by College Sports Madness to its Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference Team. An Honorable Mention All-Pac-12 Conference selection last year, she started all 19 games as part of a defense that ranked third in the Pac-12 in goals allowed per game (1.11).
Ford finished third on the squad with six points, assisting on back-to-back game-winning goals against Washington State and Washington. Ford also excelled in the classroom as she was named Honorable Mention Academic All Pac-12 and was one of 19 Utes named to the Athletics Academic Honor Roll both semesters.
Utah's New Class
Though small in number, the 2013 freshmen class brings size on defense and adds depth all over the field. Standing at 5-foot-10, Hannah Hyde brings more height and athleticism to the Ute defense, while Madeline Webster's leadership and ability to start the attack from the defensive third will bring another dynamic element to the back line.
Adding size and depth to the goalkeeper position is Tara Shipp, who also stands at 5-foot-10. Two other players will give depth to the midfield and the front and back lines with their versatility. Taylor Slattery is an attacking player who can perform up front or in the middle, while Cabria Turang is a defensive-minded player who can also transition in and out of the midfield and could give the Utes another threat on the wings. Utah also added Charlotte transfer Darby Broeker.
Six Utah Games to be Televised Live on Pac-12 Networks
The Utes will appear live on Pac-12 Networks six times this year. Their first televised game will be a non-conference tilt against Oklahoma on Sept. 22. Other scheduled televised games include: Oct. 13 at Washington State, Oct. 25 vs. No. 5 UCLA, Nov. 1 at Arizona, Nov. 3 at Arizona State and the regular-season finale on Nov. 8 vs. Colorado
UCLA was selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2013 regular season Pac-12 title. The 2012 Conference runner-ups collected 117 points and 7-of-11 possible first-place votes. Four-time defending Conference champion Stanford was a close second, tallying 115 points
Behind them were California (99), Washington (77), Arizona State (74), Oregon State (70), Washington State (70), USC (65), Utah (37), Colorado (27), Oregon (21) and Arizona (15).
