Sept. 9, 2002
THIS WEEK: The No. 23 ranked Utes (2-0-1) will take to the field to play against Idaho State (3-1-0), Thur., Sept. 12, on Ute Field at 5:00 p.m.
The women's soccer team will also gear up to face Oregon (0-3-0). This match will be held on Sun., Sept 15, in Eugene, Ore. at 12:00 p.m. on Pape' Field.
SCOUTING IDAHO STATE: The Bengals recent winning streak came to a close last week as they took on Boise State. Boise State defeated Idaho State, 3-1 to take the Bengal Classic last Sunday at Davis Field. Idaho State took second in the Bengal Classic with a record of 1-1.
SCOUTING OREGON: The Ducks are off to a slow start marking an 0-3 record this season. Their latest loss came from Gonzaga, 1-0. Oregon did manage to outshot the Zags 13-5, with a 5-3 margin on shot-on-goal. Oregon's goalkeeper Sara Peters snagged two saves in the contest.
LAST WEEK: Utah battled Northwestern and top-ranked Kentucky. In the Northwestern match, the Utes were unable to connect resulting in a scoreless tie. In the first overtime, senior Shauna Gurr-Bingham missed a 10-yard blast off the goal-post as the final minutes clicked away. Utah outshot the Wildcats 16-5.
The Utes ousted No. 18 ranked Kentucky, 2-1. "This was a great non-regional win for us," remarked coach Rich Manning. Junior forward Missy Dennis stole the show by scoring both of Utah's goals. Utah's tenacious defense did another excellent job preventing the Wildcat's attack, allowing only nine shots.
UTE NOTES: The only other time in its history that Utah has been undefeated through three games was 1996 when it was 3-0. The Utes then lost the next game to Montana (3-0) on Sept. 13. A win over Idaho State on Thursday would give Utah its best start ever.
Utah made its debut in this week's NSCAA/Adidas NCAA Div. I Regional Ranking at the No. 8 spot after impressive wins over then-No. 3 Portland (2-0) and then-No. 18 Kentucky (2-1).
Utah has two wins over ranked teams this season. They are also the first in the program's history. Coach Manning has selected senior defender Maren Harper as this year's team captain.
