This Week In Utah Soccer
The University of Utah women's soccer team continues its four-game, season-opening road swing this week. The Utes travel to Boulder, Colo. for a matchup with the No. 18/25 Colorado Buffaloes Thursday. Utah is in Pullman, Wash. for a contest at Washington State on Sunday.
Utah was 1-1-0 in its opening weekend, topping Arizona 2-1 and falling 1-0 in overtime at Long Beach State.
Thursday's match at CU will kick off at 4 p.m. Sunday's match at WSU will begin at Noon PDT.
Utah lost to Colorado 2-1 and defeated Washington State 2-1 last year in Salt Lake City.
Utah's four-game road swing to open the season is the deepest the Utes have gone into their schedule without a home game in 10 years. Utah opened the 1997 season with five straight road contests.
In the Rich Manning era, the Utes have never gone more than two matches into the season before playing a contest at Ute Field.
Colorado (1-0-1) opened the season with a 2-0 win over Denver, then played to a 1-1 tie with Fairfield. The Buffaloes are ranked 18 by the NSCAA and No. 23 by Soccer Buzz.
Colorado is led by sixth-year head coach Bill Hempen, who holds a 55-37-11 overall record as Colorado's head coach.
Sophomore Nikki Marshall was the 2006 Big XII Freshman of the Year. She is also a member of the Soccer America Preseason All-America team. Marshall already has five points on the season, scoring two goals and notching an assist in CU's first two matches.
Scouting Washington State Washington State (1-0-0) opened its 2007 campaign with a 2-1 victory over Montana last week. The Cougars will travel to Spokane, Wash. Friday for a matchup with Gonzaga prior to hosting Utah.
WSU got goals from Mallory Fox and Brooke Bemis to come from behind and defeat Montana last Friday.
Washington State is led by fourth-year head coach Matt Potter, who holds a 35-32-12 career record. Anna Miller was the Cougars' top playmaker last season, dishing out nine assists and scoring three goals of her own.
Utah holds a 3-1-0 advantage in the all-time series with Washington State. The Utes won their only previous meeting in Pullman, 3-0, on Sept. 20, 2002.
That goal wound up being the game-winner for the Utes, the 12th game-winner of Letro's collegiate career. It was also her 20th career goal.
Letro has scored in more than one-third (17-of 45) of her collegiate games. She has three career multi-goal games.
Letro has now scored in each of Utah's last two season-openers.
Kickin' It With Katy
Utah junior Katy Reineke (Salt Lake City) scored a huge goal in the Utes' last victory of 2006. She picked up right where she left off with a goal in Utah's 2007 season-opener.
Reineke scored on a free kick to open the scoring against Arizona last Friday.
Reineke has taken more shots this season than anyone on the squad. In two games, she has already tallied seven shots. Five of those seven shots were on goal. The Utes only have seven total shots on goal.
