SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team will play an exhibition match against Weber State Saturday at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The match will be prior to Real Salt Lake's contest with the Chicago Fire.
The Utah-Weber State matchup is tentatively set to kick off at 4:15 p.m. Following the exhibition match, Ute players will be signing autographs, taking photos with fans and talking about their upcoming season at a booth during Carnival Real.
"We're excited to put our team and our game in front of some new faces," Utah head coach Rich Manning said. "This will give us an opportunity to play in front of soccer fans who haven't seen us play or haven't seen a women's college soccer game."
Manning said he and the Utes also appreciated the opportunity to be a part of a Major League Soccer contest.
"Real Salt Lake has done a lot to promote soccer in our community," Manning said. "We're happy to be working with them in conjunction with this game."
RSL's game with the Chicago Fire will also be part of the U.S. Soccer Foundation Passback program. Both the Utah and Weber State teams will be honored at halftime of the Real-Fire contest for taking part in the Passback program.
A ticket for the RSL-Chicago match will get fans in to see the Utah women square off with Weber State. There is a college student discount for this game, as well. Any student presenting their Student ID may purchase a north end zone ticket (regularly $17) for just $12. For the college student discount, fans must purchase their tickets in advance at the RSL offices (700 E. 515 South, Suite 2R - Trolley Corners).
Coach Manning and the Ute players will also be a part of this week's RSL Coaches Show on KALL 700 AM. Manning and his team will be at Jerry Seiner Chevrolet (1530 South 500 West) from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday to promote the exhibition match with Weber State and the upcoming Utah Women's Soccer season.
Utah was 16-5-1 in 2006, including a 7-0-0 mark in Mountain West Conference play. The Utes won the MWC regular-season championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive season last year.
Utah opens the regular season Aug. 31 at Arizona. The Utes' home opener is slated for 14, when Idaho State visits Ute Field.
