SALT LAKE CITY - After completing its fourth day of preseason training camp Friday at Ute Field, the buzzwords around the University of Utah women's soccer team were "fun" and "excitement". Check out what a few of the players had to say about getting the 2011 season off to a great start.
Senior defender Lauren Porter
Initial thoughts on this year's camp
"This training camp feels significantly different than in years past. We have talked about it a lot. The way the coaches have organized this camp is so different, in a good way, than in the past. All of the players are excited to be here, the staff has done a great job of making every practice competitive with a purpose. I think it has really paid off, our work ethic and team bonding have been great."
On the feeling of entering training camp as a senior
"I feel like I approach every training camp with the same goal, to make it my best one yet. But it does feel weird to think that I only have four months left in my college soccer career. Every day counts. It feels a little surreal that it's here already. I do recognize it's my last season and I am going to give it everything I have."
General observations on this year's group through the first four days
"Our effort day-in and day-out has been terrific. The coaches have done a great job of making everything fun. Usually it's fun to play but then working on defending is a drag...but our defending drills today were a blast. I think our energy level has been especially high, our communication, our attitude and drive as a team have been great as well. We are all just so excited for the Pac-12."
Sophomore midfielder Jen Ericson
On her approach to her second training camp and her sophomore year
"I came into my second camp with more excitement but still a little bit of nervousness. I have a confident sense though. I feel more prepared this year and I am excited to go out and become a core part of this team."
Observations about the team so far
"The feeling on this team is just excited and so pumped. It's an awesome group and I think we are a lot better now than we were last year at this point. Our drive, desire and attitude have been a lot stronger and that has made all the difference for us."
Freshman forward Katie Taylor
On her first collegiate preseason training camp
"Coming into my first training camp, the other girls on the team made it sound like it wasn't going to be as fun as it has been so far. We are playing a lot and I really like it. The game is much stronger and faster, you have to push yourself. It's definitely a big step up from high school. The speed of play and skill level is a lot better, you definitely need better communication."
On the first four days of camp
"I feel that everyone has been really positive and each player on the team wants you to do well. I like our style of play so far, a more passing style. It fits my game and we are playing well as a team."
On her own game and her personal goals
"My goal is just to make sure I am distributing to our other playmakers, especially our upperclassmen offensive players. Personally I think speed, endurance and a great fitness level to our team are my strong points and I hope to bring that to the team."
