SALT LAKE CITY - Ute Soccer Field, home to University of Utah women's soccer, has been selected as a practice site for the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team, which will face Ireland in Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday, June 14 at 7:00 p.m. It will mark the first-ever appearance in the state of Utah by the U.S. National Team.
The U.S. will prepare for the match with Ireland by practicing at both Ute Soccer Field and Rice-Eccles Stadium during the week of the competition. The practices on Ute Soccer Field, which will be open to the public, will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 10-11. Tuesday's practice will start at 11 a.m. and Wednesday's at 10 a.m. No admission will be charged. Practices in Rice-Eccles Stadium on June 12-13 will be closed to the public.
For Utah women's soccer head coach Rich Manning, this visit represents a special opportunity. "The U.S. National Team is our Dream Team in soccer," said Manning. "To have these soccer heroes on our campus for the week will be both entertaining and inspirational. I encourage anyone who is a fan of teamwork, dedication and excellence to come out and be touched by these fantastic players."
Twenty-three players will represent the U.S. in the upcoming match with most of them arriving in Salt Lake City on Monday, June 9. Seven players, including Mia Hamm, will not arrive until Thursday, June 12, as they have games with their Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) professional teams on Wednesday.
The Irish National Team will also be in town for training before the games. Their practice schedule has yet to be announced.
