SALT LAKE CITY- In a tremendously physical game, the Spartans defeated the Utes 2-1 today. The Utes scored early when Lorrie Tipton was fed a ball by Bernie Hogan at the 4:19 mark. SJSU came back scoring at 37:28 when Dina Schindler took the ball in for an unassisted shot. The Spartans clenched the victory when Schindler shot a long ball directly into the upper left corner of the net.
The Utes suffered a key loss when Jessica Narajowski, center midfielder, left the game with a strained knee and sprained ankle at the end of the first half. She returned to play for a few minutes, but we once again pulled. Twice Utah goalkeeper Tawni Martineau was forced out of the box, resulting in backsaves for sweeper Amanda Schmutz and defender Becky Hatch.
"We played not to win, but not to lose and the mind set that we didn't want to lose made the team panic a little. San Jose State played organized and very physical, they aren't to be taken lightly. With Fresno State coming this Saturday we've got a lot of work to do to defend our home territory," Head Coach Amy Freeman Winslow says.
