SALT LAKE CITY - Lauren Field, who missed the last three games following a heart procedure, made a big impact in her return with two goals and an assist as Utah defeated Air Force 4-0 on Thursday afternoon in its Mountain West Conference opener.
Field underwent a procedure two weeks ago in an attempt to a correct a heart condition she has been experiencing since last spring. The junior forward from High Point, N.C., was cleared to play this week and checked into the game midway through the first half.
With Utah (10-2, 1-0 MWC) already staked to a 1-0 lead, Field sparked the offense, playing a part in three goals in the final 15 minutes of the half.
Field scored her first goal in the 31st minute, taking a shot from five yards out and placing it in the upper right corner. Amanda Feigt and Amber Brower were credited with assists.
Field's second goal, set up by a well-placed pass from McKenzie Joyner, came from five yards out 42:11 in. Fourteen seconds later, she set up Julie Herdic for a five-yard shot.
After Air Force (5-6-1, 0-1 MWC) had a goal in nullified seven minutes in by an offsides penalty, Utah got on the board in the 26th minute. Brower grooved a five-yard shot into the lower left side of the net. She was set up on the play by Missy Dennis and Heather Wilhelm-Carter.
The Utes outshot the Falcons 15-4 and had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Kaycie Zimmerman made two saves in goal for the Utes, playing the entire 90 minutes. It was the freshman goalkeepers second complete-game shutout of the season.
