FULLERTON, Calif. - Utah soccer stayed undefeated with another stellar defensive effort in a scoreless double-overtime draw at Cal State Fullerton this evening.
"I'm super proud of the effort because this is a tough place to play and Fullerton is tough to beat at home," Head Coach Rich Manning said. "They were picked to win their league and we came in and played with a lot of confidence and passion. We had some very good moments and now we'll go home and work on some things in practice this week."
Goalkeeper Lindsey Luke had seven saves as the Utes (1-0-2) kept a clean sheet for the third-straight game, a span of 310 minutes. The last Utah team to open a season with three-consecutive shutouts was in 2005.
Meanwhile, Lindsey Luke was staying busy at the other end. The Ute keeper made two saves, smothering a point-blank attempt in the early going. Luke was tested three times in the first 18 minutes, but came up with the save each time.
Allie Wisner had a look at goal in the 32nd minute from the top of the area, but she couldn't find the net. Shortly after that try, Katie Taylor was denied after a 2v1 situation and Harley Spier put the rebound wide.
The Titans had a dangerous free kick just outside the area in the 69th minute but Luke made another key stop.
In the final 10 minutes, Avery Ford had a chance go wide before Nielsen was denied by Lindsey Maricic on the final Ute foray in regulation. However, Luke had to make one more denial in the 89th to send the game into overtime.
Utah had the best chances in overtime as Rigby went high in the first extra session and Monica Okapal did the same in the 103rd minute.
Cal State Fullerton out-shot the Utes 14-11 and notched four corner kicks as opposed to two for Utah.
Utah is now unbeaten in its last four contests against Cal State Fullerton and their last nine games against Big West foes.
Utah has an action-packed weekend coming up starting with a trip to No. 6 BYU on Friday evening at 7 p.m. The Utes then host their home opener on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Southern Utah.
