SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The second-ranked Santa Clara Broncos eventually wore Utah down for a second-half goal, handing the Utes a 1-0 loss on Sunday afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium in the final game of the Santa Clara adidas Classic.
Utah evened its record at 1-1 while Santa Clara improved to 2-0.
Despite being outshot 16-9, the Utes held the Broncos scoreless for the first 74 minutes. But, Santa Clara kept working against Utah's defense, finally scoring a goal off of one of its 12 corner kicks. Hillary Schwarzbach hit a one-timer from 14 yards out on a ball sent in by Marian Dalmy.
Senior goalkeeper Ashley Mason was outstanding between the pipes for the Utes, making six saves--all of which came in the second half.
After Santa Clara broke the scoreless tie, the Utes rallied to put together a couple of excellent scoring chances and hit the post twice. Kelly Isleib, a freshman from Park City, Utah, drew iron on a 30-yard attempt. Hailey Marsh hit the frame with a 15-yard blast.
Utah also set-up two of its three corners in the second half.
The Utes return home to host the Utah Fall Classic next weekend at Ute Field. On Friday night, Utah State plays Arizona at 5:00 p.m. followed by Utah versus Washington State at 7:30 p.m.
