SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Utah women's soccer team opened its 2006 season with a 2-1 win over No. 19 Stanford on Friday evening in the first round of the Santa Clara adidas Classic.

Emily Campbell and Adele Letro both scored goals for the Utes (1-0), while goalkeeper Ashley Mason made four saves. The win improved Utah to 8-3-1 in season openers all-time.

Campbell, a junior from Hyde Park, Utah, opened the scoring in the 35th minute, converting a 25-yard shot that came off a Stanford clear.

The Utes put the game away in the 78th minute when Adele Letro used Kelly Isleib on a give-and-go and drilled her 12-yard shot. Letro, a native of Davis, Calif., was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year last season and already has eight career goals.

Stanford (0-1) added a late goal from Mimi Yuhas with just a minute and a half left in the game. Alex Gamble made four saves for the Cardinal in addition to allowing both goals.

The Utes outshot Stanford 10-8 and set up the only two corners in the game. The Cardinal was whistled for eight fouls to Utah's three.

The Utes face tournament host Santa Clara, ranked second in the nation in the Soccer Buzz preseason poll, on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. (PDT).
