SALT LAKE CITY -
A crowd of around 4,000 turned out to get an early glimpse of the 2009 Utah gymnastics team at the annual Red Rocks Preview on Friday night in the Huntsman Center. All 11 gymnasts competed and the Utes fielded full teams on floor and five gymnasts on beam. Vault and bars started things off with four gymnasts competing for each team.
Unlike past years, the Utes performed some of their bigger skills, even with the season nearly a month off. Said Utah associate head coach Megan Marsden, "We're farther ahead in practice this year and the (gymnasts) are prepared to do routines."
The Utes got a kick out of the scoring, which was done by fans from the stands. Kristina Baskett was headed for a perfect 40 in the all-around after receiving a 10.0 on vault, bars and beam, finish just shy with a 39.95 after receiving a 9.95 on the floor. She laughed afterwards, commenting, "I wish we had these judges during the season."
Utah opens its season on Jan. 9 against UCLA in the Huntsman Center. Season Tickets are on sale now.
