Melissa Vituj didn't run into problems until squats, reports Annie Medcalf.

SALT LAKE CITY -
Annie Medcalf, a member of Utah's gymnastics team from 2001-02, had a promising career cut short when a tumor was discovered in her vertebra. She underwent surgery last spring that required the fusing of five vertebrae, along with the removal of the tumor. Medcalf, a former U.S. National Team member from Stow, Ohio, has remained with the Utah team as an undergraduate student-assistant coach while she completes her academic degree. She is also writing a weekly diary.
This week the Utes began combinations; our next step in preparing for the upcoming season. During this phase of training the gymnasts take a few of their skills and put them together in order to get ready for full routines. The transition went very well and the coaching staff has been pleased with their progress so far. Everyone is healthy, which really helps with the consistency of our progress as a team.
Midterms. . . Midterms. . .Midterms-it's about that time! Besides the change into combinations, last week a lot of the team had exams to study for. Needless to say, there was a little stress in the air, but these girls are tough as well and determined, and they handled it well.
How low can you go? It was maximum depth day for squats this week and Melissa went a little too low. At the lowest part of her squat, she leaned back on her heals and it was all downhill from there. Luckily she's flexible and managed to wiggle her way out from under the bar only inches from the ground. She was a little flustered from her "brush with death," but she's feeling much better now. Speaking of weightlifting, Kylee's biceps are huge! She and her "armies," as she likes to call them, are getting bigger everyday. So by January she will be ready to kick some major butt.
Oh, flu shots, I can't forget to talk about those. Everyone's favorite fall tradition-not. Unfortunately, the shots make your arm sore for a few days! The team also had its unannounced drug testing this past Tuesday; don't worry they all passed with flying colors.
Well folks, that's about all for this week. The team and I do want you to remember one thing though; don't ever frown because you never know who is falling in love with your smile!!!
