SALT LAKE CITY -
The University of Utah gymnastics team placed second in the nation in team grade point average in 2001-02, posting a 3.7258 combined GPA. The Utes, who have finished in the top-two academically for the last three years, were edged out by Southern Utah (3.78 GPA).
Utah, which placed fourth at the 2002 NCAA Championships, was the 2000 academic team champion and was second academically in 2001. Of the teams who qualified for the 2002 NCAA Championships, only Utah and Alabama made the top 12 in team GPA. Alabama was one place behind Utah in the academic rankings, placing third with a 3.5988 team GPA.
Individually, Utah's Kim Alan, Shannon Bowles, Deidra Graham, Gritt Hofmann, Theresa Kulikowski, Annie Medcalf, Lindsay Tanner and Kylee Wagner were named to the NACGC/W Scholastics All-America team. In addition, Bowles and Kulikowski made the prestigious Verizon Academic All-America at-large first-team. Kulikowski, who received her bachelor's degree after her junior year in 2002, has a 4.0 cumulative GPA and was named the NCAA Division I At-Large Team Member of the Year. Bowles received an NCAA post-graduate scholarship.
