THIS WEEK IN UTAH GYMNASTICS
The No. 7-ranked Utah gymnastics team (5-1, 2-1 Pac-12) stays at home to host No. 23 Cal (6-3, 1-3 Pac-12) on Saturday, Feb. 9. The annual Short People Appreciation Night starts at 7 p.m. MST in the Huntsman Center. The meet will not be televised, but there will be free live video streaming at http://pac-12.com/live/utahutes.aspx and live scores at UtahUtes.com.
Every fan shorter than the 5-foot gymnast cutout at the entries will get into the meet for free. Seating is general admission, so fans are advised to arrive early to get seats ... While this Saturday's meet will not be televised, Utah's next two meets will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks. The meet at Washington on Feb. 15 will be tape delayed (airing regionally on Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. MT). Utah's home meet against Stanford on Feb. 23 is slated for a live national telecast at 8 p.m. MT ... In their first two home meets, the Utes averaged crowds of 14,664.
LOTHROP LOST FOR SEASON
Defending Pac-12 all-around champion, five-time All-American and junior co-captain Corrie Lothrop
is lost for the season after rupturing her left Achilles tendon during floor warm-ups in last Friday's meet against ASU. Lothrop, who had just won the balance beam with a 9.875 and was leading the all-around competition, has already had her other Achilles repaired (she tore her right Achilles prior to coming to Utah). Since she has competed in four meets, Lothrop will not be eligible for a medical hardship year. Lothrop ends her season ranked 13th in the country in the all-around and tied for 19th on bars. She completed all 15 routines without a fall, had only one score below a 9.80, and nine of her 15 routines scored a 9.85 or better. She finished with three victories--one all-around, one beam and one floor.
Sophomore All-American Tory Wilson
is the nation's top ranked vaulter, averaging a 9.944 through the first four meets, and 2012 Pac-12 uneven bar champion Georgia Dabritz
is tied for second nationally on bars (9.90 average). Wilson has won every vault competition, most recently by scoring a career-best 9.975 vs. Arizona State, while Dabritz has three wins on bars (9.95 best) ... The Utes are 4-0 at home, with three wins coming in a Jan. 19 quad meet and the other against ASU ... While the Utes have beaten three Pac-12 schools (Oregon State, Arizona and ASU), their league record is 2-1 since the OSU win came in a non-conference meet. Utah's loss was at UCLA ... Ute individual winners: Georgia Dabritz
(7), Wilson (4), Corrie Lothrop
(3), Becky Tutka
(2), Nansy Damianova
(1) and Mary Beth Lofgren
(1) ... Utes have won or tied for every individual event and all-around title in the last three meets ... The Utes have hit 89-96 routines. Gymnasts without a fall are Lothrop (15-15), Breanna Hughes
(8-8), Tutka (8-8) and Lia Del Priore
With junior all-arounder Corrie Lothrop
lost the season, the Utes must fill four spots in the lineup. Anticipated replacements are Mary Beth Lofgren
(vault), Tory Wilson
(bars), Haley Lange
(beam) and Lia Del Priore
(floor) ... Saturday's meet will mark Wilson's all-around debut, as well as the first scoring routine for the freshman Lange ... Injuries have taken a big toll on the Utes this season. All-Americans Lothrop and Kailah Delaney
are out--Lothrop (Achilles surgery) for the season and Delaney (knee surgery) indefinitely--and projected all-arounder Kassandra Lopez
(calf) can only do bars.
IN THE RANKINGS
Utah jumped two places in the rankings to No. 7--its best mark since a No. 5 preseason ranking. Tory Wilson
leads the nation on vault (9.944 season average), Georgia Dabritz
is tied for second on bars (9.9), Becky Tutka
is tied for 12th on floor (9.881) and Corrie Lothrop
is 13th in the all-around (39.317). Other Utes in the top 25 are Dabritz on vault (15T/9.888), Lothrop on bars (19T/9.85), Breanna Hughes
on beam (25T/9.838) and Nansy Damianova
on floor (23T/9.863). See page 3 for complete rankings.
The No. 9-ranked Utah gymnasts beat Arizona State 196.425-195.450--scoring season highs on three events--but the mood was somber after the team learned it had lost its leader for the season to a ruptured Achilles. Defending Pac-12 champion, five-time All-American and junior co-captain Corrie Lothrop
was injured in warm-ups before Utah's final event--the floor exercise. Tory Wilson
won her fourth-straight vault competition with a 9.975, Georgia Dabritz
won the all-around (38.90) and bars (9.95), Lothrop won beam (9.875) and Becky Tutka
won floor (9.925) as Utah swept the individual titles.
