SALT LAKE CITY - Annie Medcalf, a member of Utah's gymnastics team from 2001-02, had a promising career cut short when a tumor was discovered in her vertebra. She underwent surgery last spring that required the fusing of five vertebrae, along with the removal of the tumor. Medcalf, a former U.S. National Team member from Stow, Ohio, has remained with the Utah team as an undergraduate student-assistant coach while she completes her academic degree. She is also writing a weekly diary.
ONE FOR THE UTES!
At the meet last Friday against BYU the UTES were rockin' the house. The team did a great job and it's always a blast to beat BYU!
Once again the freshmen did an amazing job. Riff hit three solid events (vault, bars, and floor). Nat fell on her release move on bars, but was so-o-o close, everyone thought she had it (Don't worry Nat you'll get it this week!). She finished strong though with a beautiful floor routine. Gritt rocked her vault and had a gorgeous beam set; the entire team kept commenting on how good she looked.
AB was on fire! She hit four out of four. We were a little concerned after warm-ups for bars because she couldn't make a first half. Fortunately though, she is a great competitor and can get the job done when the time comes.
"V" and Mel both had incredible meets. Veronique added her double layout dismount on bars and hopefully next week we will see her front handspring pike half on vault. Mel was an animal again on Friday; she had four great performances and the highest all-around score.
Kylee had a wonderful beam routine. Due to a sore Achilles, she took a break on floor last week but should be back strong this Friday against ASU. Kim has just been unbelievable this year. I think being so happy all the time has definitely helped her. Her vault was through the roof, her bar dismount was to the ceiling, her beam was graceful, and her floor was powerful.
Now for our injury report: They are all healing well. Kulio is getting better every day, Dom is progressing each week and already doing full sets on bars without her dismount, and Crystal is feeling better all the time. Gabi is beginning to get back into shape and getting close on a couple of events. Keep them all in your thoughts and we should begin to see them back in the lineup soon!
Practices continue to go well. Everyone is working on new skills that they are planning to put into their routines. Some of them may even go in this week.
We had two birthdays this week. Dominique turned 19 on January 19 and Kulio is 23 on January 23. OK that's just too weird 19 on the 19th and 23 on the 23rd. Happy birthday to the tallest RED ROCKS.
Don't forget to come watch the Utes this Friday at 7:00 against Arizona State in the Huntsman Center.
