SALT LAKE CITY--
The gymnasts turned in the best fall semester in the classroom of Utah's athletic teams, combining for a 3.651 team GPA. Hailee Hansen, Breanna Hughes and Mary Beth Lofgren all recorded 4.0 grade point averages in the fall, while Corrie Lothrop (3.936) and Kailah Delaney (3.931) were close behind.
Utah, which opens its 2013 season at UCLA on Jan. 12 in a nationally-televised meet on the Pac-12 Networks, saw nine gymnasts make the fall semester Dean's List (requires a 3.5 GPA): Hansen (4.0), Hughes (4.0), Lofgren (4.0), Lothrop (3.936), Delaney (3.931), Lia Del Priore (3.75), Nansy Damianova (3.70), Georgia Dabritz (3.681) and Becky Tutka (3.65). Joining them on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (3.0 minimum GPA) were Haley Lange and Tory Wilson.
The heavy emphasis on academics at Utah was on display this morning when the gymnasts received complimentary iPads from the athletics department that were pre-loaded with apps for word processing (Pages), spreadsheets (Numbers), presentations (Keynote), note-taking and recording of lectures (Notability) and electronic textbooks (Kno). The department is providing iPads to all of its scholarship athletes.
"Our athletics department has always been committed to providing top-level academic support services to our teams and the iPads are further evidence of that commitment," said Utah coach Greg Marsden. "When a gymnast comes to the University of Utah, we can guarantee her not only the best in training facilities, competition, fan support and media exposure, but also the best possible academic experience."
The iPads are the latest in a long list of academic support services the U teams receive. The athletics department also offers individual and group tutoring sessions, academic mentors, priority registration, a summer "bridge" program for entering freshmen, and scholarships for summer school and fifth-year study.
