SALT LAKE CITY - Freshman Shannon Bowles led a shorthanded Utah team to a 194.95- 192.175 win over No. 9 Minnesota before 9,116 fans in the Huntsman Center. Just eight healthy competitors were available for the No. 2 ranked Utes, who found out just before the meet they would be without the services of senior All-American Traci Sommer (injured back) and freshman Theresa Wolf (flu).
Although not nearly as sharp as they were a week before in a win over Brigham Young, the Bowles-led Utes had enough firepower to stop Minnesota. Bowles won or tied three of the four events, in addition to winning the all-around with a 39.50. She won the bars with a 9.925, the beam (9.875) and tied with teammate Angie Leonard on the floor (9.80). Leonard bounced back from an atypical start to win bars (9.925), place second on beam (9.80) and share the floor title. Utah's last vaulter up, Leonard sat both vaults for the first time in her career, but got back on track quickly.
Utah (4-1) took control of the meet on the bars, where the Utes tied their season best with a solid 49.35. Sarah Northrop opened the set with a 9.85 and no Ute scored lower than a 9.80. The big bar set gave Utah nearly a point and a half cushion--more than a point better than its round one advantage over the Golden Gophers. Bowles and sophomore Angelika Schatton, a late addition to the lineup with the injuries to Sommer and Wolf, kept Utah ahead on the beam. Bowles hit her season average of 9.875 and Schatton contributed a 9.80 in her first-ever beam to count. Utah wrapped things up with its worst floor performance of the year for Utah (47.975). The low score was due in part to the fact that the Utes had just five gymnasts available and had to count Schatton's fall. But Minnesota (5-2) ran into even bigger problems on its final event, counting three falls on the balance beam.
