SAN FRANCISCO - The University of Utah women's basketball team was picked to finish seventh in the Pac-12 Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, it was announced Thursday during the annual Media Day event at the Pac-12 Network Studios. Utah accumulated 59 points in the poll to earn seventh for the second straight year, while taking sixth in the 2011-12 rankings.
"Preseason polls are great things for the media and fans," Utah Head Coach Anthony Levrets said. "We can't pay too much attention to what others think about our team and our prospects for the upcoming year. We love our group and believe this team has a chance to carry on and build on the great tradition that is Utah women's basketball."
Leading this year's voting was Stanford with 121 points and 11 first-place votes, followed by California (111 points, 1 first-place vote) and Colorado (91 points) in second and third, respectively. Washington (85 points), UCLA (80 points) and USC (77 points) fill in the standings ahead of Utah with Oregon State (51 points), Washington State (50 points), Arizona State (29 points), Arizona (21 points) and Oregon (17 points) finishing behind the Utes.
Levrets and Sporting News Preseason Third Team All-American senior forward Michelle Plouffe are being kept busy throughout the day by filming spots for use in promoting women's basketball on the Pac-12 Networks, and met with members of the media to discuss the team.
The Utes host the University of Mary on Friday, Nov. 1 in an exhibition game at the Huntsman Center (5:15 p.m. MT) and begin their season officially on Friday, Nov. 8 against Denver at 8:30 p.m. MT.
