SALT LAKE CITY - Fans got their first glimpse of the 2006-07 version of the University of Utah men's and women's basketball teams Tuesday during "Night With the Utes" at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Both teams scrimmaged and took part in a combined three-point shootout. The men also staged their first-ever slam dunk contest. To conclude the evening, men's head coach Ray Giacoletti and women's head coach Elaine Elliott spoke to the assembled crowd about their prospects for the upcoming season.
After the women won the three-point shootout last season prior to their NCAA Elite Eight run, the men claimed victory this time around. The men's team of Shaun Green, Johnnie Bryant and Ricky Johns out-dueled the women's team of Marie Warner, Morgan Warburton and Heidi Carlsen, 41-39.
Bryant led the men by going 16-for-25. Carlsen, who went last, gave a great effort for the women but came up two points short. Carlsen made 17-of-25 three-pointers to lead all contestants.
In the women's 10-minute scrimmage, the Red Team took a tight, 11-9 decision. The red-clad Utes were paced by Joh-Teena Filipe (So., Salt Lake City), who scored five points and pulled down two rebounds. The 6-1 Filipe also hit the Red Team's only three-pointer. Camie Oakey (Sr., Flower Mound, Texas) tacked on four points for the Red, while Kalee Whipple (Fr., Hiko, Nev.) hit her only shot of the night.
The White Team was paced by Warner (Jr., Hamilton, Ont.) with four points--all at the free-throw line. Jessica Perry (Jr., Guelph, Ont.) hit the only three-pointer the white-clad Utes attempted and added a blocked shot. Transfer Leilani Mitchell (Sr., Kennewick, Wash.) added two points, an assist, a blocked shot and a steal for the White Team.
The men's team opened the on-court activities with a 15-minute scrimmage. The Red and White teams finished in a 15-15 tie.
Sophomore center Luke Nevill (Perth, Australia), scored a game-high eight points for the Red Team. The honorable mention all-MWC performer in 2005-06 hit 4-of-5 shots from the field. Borha had three assists and Bryant contributed three points for the Red Team.
Chris Grant (Salt Lake City) led the White Team with six points. The sophomore guard made all three shots from the field. Tille (Cagnes-sur-Mer, France) had five points while connecting on 2-of-4 shots and hitting 1-of-2 three-point attempts. Both Grant and freshman Luka Drca (Belgrade, Serbia) had two assists.
Both teams shot well, with the White Team hitting at a 58.3 percent clip and the Red Team shooting 53.8 percent from the field.
The Ute women will open their exhibition season Nov. 4, hosting Albertson College in a 3 p.m. contest at the Huntsman Center. Following another exhibition on Nov. 7, the Utah women open the regular season on the road at Gonzaga on Nov. 10.
Utah's men play home exhibition games on Nov. 3 against Brock University and Nov. 6 versus Montana Tech. Both games will tip-off at 7 p.m. The Runnin' Utes open the regular season on Nov. 10 against Southern Utah at 7 p.m. in the Huntsman Center
