RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- University of Utah senior women's basketball player Kim Smith continues to play well internationally this summer. Last week, Smith led her Canadian Senior Women's National Team to a 2-1 record at the Jogos Desafio Eletrobras Tournament in Rio de Janeiro.
Canada opened play in the tournament with a 72-62 victory over Argentina Wednesday. Smith scored a game-high 21 points in the contest, while also pulling down eight rebounds.
The Canadians then took a tight, 66-64 decision over Cuba in its second game of the round robin tournament. Smith grabbed a game-high nine rebounds in the victory over Cuba, including five in the first quarter alone. She scored nine points as well.
The tournament wrapped up on a sour note for Canada, however. Brazil, which has now defeated the Canadians three times this summer, took an 87-67 win on Friday. Smith scored five points, but grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in the loss to the Brazilians.
For the Jogos Desafio Eletrobras Tournament, Smith averaged 11.7 points and 8.7 rebounds.
Canada returns home to start a three-game exhibition series against Puerto Rico in Waterloo, September 6-8. Team Canada will then head for Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic for the FIBA 2006 World Championship Qualifying Tournament, slated for Sept. 14-18.
