SALT LAKE CITY - Chris Tunis, a longtime, award-winning sports broadcaster, and the play-by-play announcer for the Utah women's basketball team for the past decade, has died of cancer at age 54. Tunis also hosted the postgame call-in show for Utah football games.
Utah Director of Athletics Dr. Chris Hill expressed the feelings of the Utah athletics department when learning of Tunis' death. "This is a sad day for all of us who forged lasting friendships with Chris over the years, and for many others who have known him through his work as a broadcaster for some of our teams. Chris has been a personal friend to me for many years and I have always appreciated his professional skills, his upbeat personality, and most importantly, the friendship he has shared with all of us in Utah athletics. He will be sorely missed."
Tunis worked in broadcasting in Salt Lake City for nearly 30 years. He was named as the Utah Broadcaster of the Year seven times during his career. The last several years he worked as an account representative with the Enterprise Newspaper Group.
Tunis is survived by his wife Julie and daughter Jacqueline.
