SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah senior Kim Smith (Mission, B.C.) is currently in Brazil with Canada's Senior Women's Basketball Team, playing in a series of exhibitions. Smith played very well in a pair of exhibition losses to Brazil in Sau Paulo, Brazil over the weekend.
Brazil defeated Canada 93-80 Saturday. After a close first quarter, the host team opened a 52-44 lead by halftime. Brazil increased its lead to 11 points in the third quarter, before the outside shooting of Smith and teammate Carolyn Ganes cut the Brazil margin to four with two minutes left in the quarter. Canada outscored Brazil in the third quarter 26-22 to pull within four points (74-70) going into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Canada could not find its shooting stroke, resulting in only five points over the first seven minutes of the period. Brazil took advantage and sealed the win. Smith scored 20 points to lead Team Canada. She also pulled down six rebounds.
Sunday's game against the Brazilians was much closer, but Canada ended up dropping a 98-97 decision in overtime. Trailing 44-36 at halftime, Smith and Canada's bench helped lead a comeback in the third quarter as they outscored the Brazilians 24-19, closing the gap to three (63-60) after three quarters of play. The Canadians led by six with two minutes remaining, but Brazil scored a field goal with four seconds remaining to tie the game and send it into overtime.
In overtime, the lead changed hands numerous times before Brazil hit a shot with 0.6 seconds remaining in the overtime period to take the win. Smith was Canada's leading scorer again, tallying a game-high 31 points, including five three-pointers.
Canada plays an exhibition tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil beginning Wednesday. The Canadians will face Argentina, Cuba and Brazil in the Jogos Desafio Eletrobras Tournament. Canada's exhibition tour of South America is in preparation for the FIBA World Championship Qualifying Tournament, slated for Sept. 14-18 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
