SALT LAKE CITY - A national awards committee of leading basketball coaches, journalists and basketball administrators announced its preseason list for the State Farm Wade Trophy Division I Player of the Year today. University of Utah senior forward Kim Smith (Mission, B.C.) is one of the 25 players who are listed as preseason candidates for one of the most prestigious awards in collegiate women's basketball.
According to a release from the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, candidates are selected on the following criteria: game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team and overall playing ability. Smith is the only player from a Mountain West Conference school to be included on the list.
Smith's inclusion on the preseason list marks the third consecutive year that she has been identified as one of the top 25 players in the nation. She is one of 11 players who were on last year's preseason list and one of just four who have made three appearances.
Smith is a three-time Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and has earned All-America honors in each of her first three seasons with Utah. Last season, Smith broke the Utes' single-season scoring record. She is on pace to become the Utes' all-time leading scorer by the end of this season and currently ranks No. 5 in career scoring.
Utah was 26-8 last season, won a share of the Mountain West Conference regular season championship and advanced the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Smith averaged 17.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game last season, leading the MWC in both categories.
