COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah women's basketball player Taryn Wicijowski was selected as the 2009-10 Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, as three Utes earned all-conference honors, the MWC announced today. Seniors Kalee Whipple and Halie Sawyer were also selected.
Kalee Whipple earned first-team honors for the second time in her career. She is a four-time all-conference pick, earning second-team honors as a sophomore and first-team honors as a freshman. Wicijowski was named to the second team while Sawyer was picked for the All-Defensive team.
Whipple leads the MWC with 17.2 points per game. She has scored over 20 points in nine games this season with six double-doubles. Whipple set a school and conference record with 45 points against TCU on Feb. 10.
Wicijowski, who was also the Preseason Freshman of the Year, is in the top 10 of the MWC standings in both scoring (14.1) and rebounding (6.6). She is first in the MWC and ranked in the top 20 nationally in field goal percentage (.558).
Sawyer is averaging 7.9 rebounds per game, which ranks fifth in the MWC. She has 36 blocked shots (1.2 per game) which ranks fifth in the conference. Sawyer has three double-doubles this year.
"This is well deserved for all three of them," head coach Elaine Elliott said. "Kalee has had a great career and a great senior season. Taryn has proven to be one of the best young talents in the league and on the national scene. Halie did a nice job for us in a lot of different ways this year and it's nice to see her get some recognition."
