Feb. 6, 2006
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV forward Sherry McCracklin and Utah forward Kim Smith were named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Co-Players of the Week. For Smith, it is her fourth such honor this season and the seventh of her career.
Smith, a 6-1 senior from Mission, B.C., went over 2,000 points for her career against New Mexico. She is just the third Utah woman to reach 2,000 points and the sixth Utah player (male or female) to reach that plateau. Smith also reached double figures for the 18th and 19th times this season and has scored 10-plus points in 111 of 116 career games.
Against New Mexico, she scored all seven of her second-half points in the final 5:21, when the game was in doubt. Against Wyoming, she scored 47 percent of the team's points. She shot .733 from the field, while the rest of the team shot just .300, and scored 20 points or more for the 10th time this season against Wyoming. It was her fourth straight 20-point game.
For the week, Smith averaged 20.0 points and 11.5 rebounds, while collecting three assists and four steals. She shot an average of 59.3 percent from the field (16-for-27), including 7-for-9 from the free-throw line (.778).
McCracklin, a 6-2 senior from Hazel Crest, Ill., had a huge week for the Lady Rebels, and looked to be the key to leading them to two wins last week until suffering a concussion while drawing a charge in a loss to Wyoming on Saturday, Feb. 4. Prior to the injury, she had scored 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting, was a perfect 3-of-3 at the line, and had two blocks. Just three days earlier, McCracklin had her best game of the year in a 61-50 win over TCU, when she posted season and game-highs of 21 points and 16 rebounds. She was 7-of-9 from the floor, and 7-of-10 from the line.
For the week, McCracklin averaged 19.0 points and 11.0 rebounds, while collecting three blocks and two assists. She shot an average of 63.6 percent from the field (14-for-22), including 10-for-13 from the charity stripe (.769).
