Last Time Out
Despite cutting a double-digit deficit to a point in the final seconds, it wasn't enough for Utah as they fell to Oregon, 72-67 on Thursday evening. The Utes fall to 10-11, 3-7 in the Pac-12 with the loss.
Down by 10 with less than two minutes remaining, 65-55, Janita Badon started a fast and furious rally with a three-pointer after a steal, which was the start of 12 total points through the remainder of the game. Utah would end up cutting the lead down to a point, 68-67 with 19 seconds left, before Oregon went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line to push the final margin back up to five points to close out the game. Oregon went 7-of-9 from the charity stripe in the final span.
The final rally was the culmination of a long comeback for the Utes. For the second-straight game, Utah spotted its opponent a big lead and had to claw back into it. Oregon raced out to a 23-5 lead through the first 11 minutes of the game. The Ducks largest lead was 19 points.
Oregon State Update
Oregon State extended its winning streak to three games with a 65-45 win over Colorado on Thursday evening. OSU is 14-7 overall, 5-5 in the Pac-12.
The Beavers used runs of 7-0 and 12-2 to lead 33-17 at halftime, shooting 11-of-26 from the field in the first half. Colorado was just 4-of-24. Oregon State led by as many as 27 in the second half.
Senior Earlysia Marchbanks was the Beavers' leading scorer with 13 points and five rebounds.
News and Notes
Taryn Wicijowski was named to the Capital One Academic All-District team on Thursday. She is one of three Pac-12 players on the team.
Wicijowski, who led Utah with nine rebounds against Oregon, moved up to fifth in the conference in rebounding (8.4). She also had a team-high 19 points against the Ducks, and is 11th in the conference with 12.5 points per game.
Michelle Plouffe, who was limited to 26 minutes against Oregon with foul trouble, continues to lead the Utes in scoring (14 ppg). She is ninth in the Pac-12 in the category.
Rachel Messer was in double-digit scoring against Oregon (12 points) for the fifth time this season and the second time in the last three games.
Janita Badon increased her conference lead in assists with nine against Oregon. She is averaging 5.8 assists per game, which also ranks 15th in the NCAA.
The Utes continue to rank second in the Pac-12 in scoring defense (55.0) and free-throw percentage (.713).
Utah allowed 40 first-half points to Oregon, the most they have allowed in a first half this season. Oregon's 72 points is the most Utah has allowed this season.
Over half of Utah's shots against Oregon were from three-point range (34 of 66). The Utes made 10 three's, tying a season-high (Utah also had 10 three's against BYU).
