Utes Host No. 23 TCU Thursday
The University of Utah women's basketball team returns home to the friendly confines of the Jon M. Huntsman Center for the first time since Jan. 4 on Thursday. The Utes, who went 3-0 on their recent road swing, will face nationally-ranked TCU in a 7 p.m. Mountain West Conference game.
Utah is 11-6 overall and 4-0 in league action. The Utes gave head coach Elaine Elliott her 500th career victory, when they defeated CSU last Thursday night.
TCU comes into Thursday's contest ranked No. 23 in the latest USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll. The Lady Frogs are 13-4 overall and 3-0 in MWC action. TCU is coming off an 87-61 win over Air Force. The Lady Frogs have won their three MWC games by an average of 33.7 points.
TCU won both meetings with Utah last year.
Utah Fast Breaks
Elaine Elliott became the 32nd NCAA Division I women's basketball coach ever to record 500 wins last Thursday. She's the 25th active coach to reach that milestone.
Last Saturday's game at UNLV was Elliott's 700th as a collegiate head coach, all at Utah.
Utah is 7-0 this season when scoring 66 points or more. The Utes are 5-0 when holding opponents below 50 points.
The 14-point deficit overcome at New Mexico on Jan. 7 was the largest the Utes have overcome all season.
Utah has allowed an average of just 47.5 points per game in league play, tops in the MWC.
Warburton Named MWC Player of the Week
Sophomore guard Morgan Warburton (Helper, Utah) reached 20 points in both of Utah's outings last week at Colorado State and UNLV. Warburton has now tallied 20 or more in five of 17 games this season. She has gone for double figures in 14 of the Utes' 17 contests. Utah's record in games when Warburton is held to single digits is 1-2. Last week, Warburton scored six points in a row to help Utah overcome an early deficit at Colorado State and also had a career-high seven assists against the Rams. Saturday, she scored 15 of her 20 in the second half as the Utes came back from a nine-point deficit to defeat the Lady Rebels.
On Thursday, Utah head coach Elaine Elliott will be coaching her first game at the Huntsman Center since reaching the 500-win milestone last Thursday at Colorado State. Utah Athletics will be honoring Elliott before and during the game. Prior to tipoff, Ute Director of Athletics Dr. Chris Hill will present Elliott with a commemorative basketball. Also, the first 500 fans in attendance will receive commemorative t-shirts. In addition to Thursday's celebration, Utah women's basketball alumni will gather on Jan. 27 for the BYU game to honor Coach Elliott as well.
