SALT LAKE CITY - A dominant second half lifted the Utah women's basketball team to a 56-31 win over Idaho State on Tuesday evening.
Utah held Idaho State to just 12 points and 17 percent shooting during the second half. The Bengals only had five points in the second half until four minutes remaining in the game. The Utes held a 46-31 rebounding advantage.
Utah shot 50 percent over the first nine minutes of the second half and led by as many as 28 points in the game.
"I'm really, really pleased with our defensive effort," Utah head coach Anthony Levrets said. "We had been on the road for basically two weeks and it's hard to practice your base defense when you're out on the road and trying to prepare for games. I was not pleased with our effort against Weber State and we guarded our tails off tonight. We weren't as good offensively as we need to be, but our effort on the defensive end was incredible and I'm really pleased with that."
The Utes were led by Janita Badon's 14 points and six assists, while Michelle Plouffe scored 12 and had two blocks. Both Badon and Plouffe had a team-high nine rebounds. Iwalani Rodrigues was also in double figure scoring with 11 points. Taryn Wicijowski had eight rebounds to go with five points and two blocks.
"Idaho State had a great game plan, they were going to double team Taryn on every catch," Levrets said. "We have not seen that yet but it's great for us because we're going to see it later on. We were able to survive her not having her normal night, and win, and get that on film. It's going to help us a ton as we go forward."
Although the Utes jumped out to a quick 9-2 start in the first half, Idaho State scored the next six points to cut the lead to 9-8. The first half lead stayed within single digits before the Utes pulled ahead in the final minutes. Up by five, 22-17 with two minutes left, Utah closed out the half with a 7-2 run, including a hail mary three from Badon at the buzzer, to take a 10-point lead into halftime, 29-19.
Idaho State was led by nine points from Kaela Oakes.
The Utes return to the court on Saturday, Dec. 10, taking on Brigham Young in Provo at 3:00 p.m. MT. The game will be televised on BYU-TV.
