TEMPE, Ariz. - Michelle Plouffe had her fifth double-double of the season as the Utah women's basketball team defeated Arizona State, 54-46 on Friday evening.
The Utes (14-10, 5-8 Pac-12) have won four of their last five games with the win.
"We are really proud of our team," Utah head coach Anthony Levrets said. "We got out-statisticed in most categories, but the only statistic that matters is that we had more points at the end of the game. We gutted it out and played really hard. It was a really good win for our team."
Plouffe scored 21 points with a career-high 17 rebounds. Taryn Wicijowski was also in double-figure scoring with 19 points. Together, Plouffe and Wicijowski together accounted for nearly three-fourths of Utah's scoring.
"We felt like we had a really good advantage in there," Levrets said. "They are both good at a lot of things. When you have a player like Plouffe, and all the things that she is good at, does them all in one night, it's a pretty special thing to get to watch. Obviously, they are very talented, but everyone else has to give them the basketball, everyone else has to execute to get the ball to them, and what we did tonight as a team defensively as a group was incredible."
Utah shot 42 percent from the floor and held ASU to 27 percent shooting.
Utah took an 8-0 lead over the first five minutes of the game before ASU scored its first basket of the contest. However, the Sun Devils got back in the game quickly with a 7-1 run.
The lead changed four times during the first half. Utah held a 22-21 lead with two minutes remaining in the half. The Utes held ASU scoreless through those final two minutes and with the help of baskets from Wicijowski and Plouffe, the Utes took a 26-21 lead into the locker room at the half. Plouffe had 12 points and nine rebounds to lead Utah at halftime, while Wicijowski had 10 points at the break.
The Utes continue on the road against Arizona on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 5:00 p.m. MT.
