SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team assistant coach Roeland Brateanu announced the signing of Slim Hamza of Tunisia, Africa, to a National Letter of Intent.
"After signing 5-star recruit Ace Matias last week, I am very proud to announce yet another big commitment to our program. We would like to welcome Tunisian national Slim Hamza to our Ute family," said Brateanu. "Slim is a phenomenal player with a proven international track record. He is an offensive minded player with great athleticism and has a huge upside to him. Least to say, we expect Slim to be an immediate contributor in both singles and doubles."
Hamza, a member of the Tunisian Davis Cup team and current Tunisian Adult National Singles Champion, has an impressive record. He is currently ranked No. 1 in Tunisian juniors and senior divisions and has been ranked as high as No. 69 in ITF World Rankings. At the Junior Australian Open, he reached the second round and at the 2009 Orange Bowl, he reached the round of 16 after defeatinga No. 5-U.S ranked Harry Fowler. Hamza is a 2010 Junior African Continental runner-up in both singles and doubles, as well as a two-time singles runner up and doubles champion at the junior Arabic event.
"I am really excited to become part of the University of Utah tennis team and to be a part of the Ute family," Hamza stated.
"Since the announcement of our invitation to the Pac-12 it has been our goal to rebuild this program in order to compete in the best conference in the country," noted Brateanu. "With our current group of young guys, in combination with our last two commitments, we have made a huge step in that process. I am very excited about the direction of our program!"
