Ganger Prepares to Face the No. 1 Seed in the All-American Tournament

SALT LAKE CITY - Senior Zach Ganger (33) prepares for his third appearance in the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tournament in Tulsa, Okla. Competition is set to begin on Thursday, Oct. 4. The Ute will face the No. 1 seed Somdev Devvarman (1) from Virginia for the first round of competition. This is the first opportunity in fifteen years that a member of the University of Utah men's tennis team could become an All-American Champion.

Ganger, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., completed last season with a 27-12 overall singles record after representing Utah at the 2007 NCAA Championships. Last year, Ganger played in the qualifying round of the All-American Tournament. He played Robert Lathouwers from Auburn University for a 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-4 victory. In the Round of 64, Ganger faced Dominik Mueller of Baylor University. After a three-set battle, Mueller advanced into the third round with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 win over Ganger.

If Ganger wins in the first round he will play the winner of the Dmytro Petrov (Oklahoma State) verses Matco Maravic (Michigan). First and second round of the tournament will be played on Thursday. After the experience Ganger gained in the last two years he is optimistic as he enters the main draw competition for the first time.

"I am excited to be going back to the All-Americans this year as a main draw competitor. It is a great opportunity to be able to represent Utah again in this tournament," states Ganger. "No matter who I compete against, I know it will be tough, but I have been preparing. After doing this for the past two years, it has given me a lot of good experience, so I expect to do well."

The first and second round of the main draw competition will be played on Thursday. There will be a consolation bracket for the competitors that lose in the first round of the tournament The All-American Champion will be determined after play on Oct. 7.

The 2007 Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championship will be hosted by the University of Tulsa at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. It is the largest collegiate tennis tournament and one of four of the major national championship tournaments.
