LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah men's tennis team saw juniors Cedric Willems and Cameron Lee advance to the doubles quarterfinal round Friday at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships at the Darling Tennis Center. Willems also advanced to the singles consolation draw quarterfinals.
Willems downed James Hignett of New Mexico, 6-4, 6-3, in the third round of the consolation draw, and followed with a narrow 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over New Mexico's Bryan Cunningham in the fourth round. The junior will take on Utah State's Sean Levesque Saturday at 11 a.m. PT in the quarterfinal round.
In other singles matches, third-seeded junior Slim Hamza was defeated by ninth-seeded Henry Craig of Denver in the round of 16. Senior Alejandro Medinilla fell to UNLV's 25th-seeded Denys Pume, 6-3, 6-1, in the third round of the consolation draw.
In doubles action, ninth-seeded Lee and Willems netted an 8-6 victory over Weber State's Oliver Good and Sanjay Goswami in the round of 16. The Utes will battle fourth-seeded Ace Matias and Pume of UNLV Saturday at 10 a.m. PT.
In other doubles matches, senior Devin Lane an Hamza fell to ninth-seeded Thomas Douglas and Naveen Manivannan of New Mexico State, 8-3, in the main draw round of 16. Sophomore Justin Archer, who teamed up with Boise State's Abe Hewko in the doubles consolation draw, suffered a tight 8-7(3) loss to Hignett and Sam Iftikhar of New Mexico.
