SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team finished out the Utah Intercollegiate Tournament on Saturday indoors at Eccles Tennis Center. The Utes owned wins in the main draw singles bracket, the consolation singles bracket, and the consolation doubles bracket.
In the finals for the main draw singles, Zach Ganger (33) faced teammate Wes Hancock. Hancock, a junior from St. George, Utah, took the first set at 6-4. Ganger, a senior and native of Jacksonville, Fla., dug in and found his game in the second set to take it 6-3. The third set went quickly; as Ganger stepped in to take the set and match at 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Othman Zerouali-Ouariti was challenged today by Sasha Kiehne from Weber State. It was an intense battle between the Ute and Wildcat. After fighting back and forth, and both sets ending in a tie-breaker, the Ute made the final decision to take the match 7-6(3), 7-6(5).
Quote from Assistant Coach Roeland Brateanu:
"It was good to see our guys win the tournament in both of the singles draws. Although Othman struggled to find the court today, he found a way to win. Zach and Wes ended up playing each other in the finals and it is always a little awkward playing your teammate. Nevertheless, we had hoped to have a little more spark out of them, but it was nice to see two Utes in the finals.
In doubles play we had hoped to see one of our teams to compete for the title in the main draw, but after a rough first day it was nice to see our guys recover and play in the finals of the consolation draw."
