SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team completed their first day of the Utah Intercollegiate Tournament on Thursday outdoors at Liberty Park Tennis Center. The tourney held two rounds of main draw singles, one round in the consolation singles bracket, and one round of doubles play in the main draw. Three singles players and three doubles teams will advance into the quarterfinals that will be held on Friday at 9:00 a.m.
After receiving a bye in the Round of 32, Zach Ganger (33) hit Jonas Tyden of Utah State with a clear-cut 6-2, 6-0 domination. Jason Smits faced Fabio Mancarella from Weber State in the Round of 32. After battling through three sets, the Ute took the match at 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to move into the second round. Smits followed through again in the Round of 16, but this time against teammate Amit Maharaj. The two Utes played through two sets for a 6-2, 6-1 victory in Smits' favor.
Wes Hancock played a solid match against Tyler Conts of BYU in the Round of 32 on Thursday. The Ute executed a 6-0, 6-2 win over the Cougar to advance Hancock into the next round. In the Round of 16, Hancock faced teammate Stephen Jacobs. The Utes played through two sets, with Hancock arising as the victor with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Jacobs.
It was an intense day on the courts in doubles play for the Utes on Thursday. Covington and Marchant from Weber State challenged Othman Zerouali-Ouariti and Smits Round of 16. Although the Aggies fought hard against the Utes, it was the Ute duo in the end that took the match at 8-4. The big victory, however, came from Jacobs and Maharaj in the Round of 16. The Ute duo faced Hipp and Plum from Weber State. The duos went point for point, forcing the match into a tie-breaker. After several long and powerful rallies, it was the Utes that pulled ahead for the win. Jacobs and Maharaj pulled out a 9-8 win. The two Ute duos will begin the Quarterfinals on Friday along with Ganger and John Taylor that had received a bye in the first round.
