Ben Tasevac won in singles and doubles action today

SALT LAKE CITY - On the first day of the 2013 Utah Intercollegiate Tournament, four Utes were victorious and advanced into the semifinals of their respective draws."It was great getting some wins today from our guys," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "We are looking forward to seeing some higher-quality play tomorrow and Saturday."
No. 1 seed Slim Hamza, ranked 84th in the nation, handily beat Weber State's Matt Sweet, 6-0, 6-1, while Ben Tasevac beat Jacob Sullivan (BYU) 6-2, 6-1. Hamza will now face Andrey Goryachkov (BYU) and Tasevac will play BYU's Francis Sargeant in semifinal action. Both matches are scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m.
Second seeded Alejandro Medinilla beat Matt Pearce (BYU) who retired after dropping the first set 6-0 and falling behind 3-1 in the second. Medinilla will play Weber State's Caio Poitena in the Black Draw semfinals Friday at 10 a.m. Devin Lane received a bye as the No. 1 seed and will play Juan Canales (BYU) Friday at the same time.
In doubles action, Utah won three of its four matches. Hamza teamed with Lane for wins in Group A over Galli/Sullivan (BYU), 8-4 and Willems/Lee (Utah), 8-4. In Group B doubles action, Medinilla paired with Tasevac and the duo overcame Utah State's Harlow/Wearmouth pairing, 8-4.
Cedric Willems (Red Draw), Cameron Lee (Black Draw) and Justin Archer (White Draw) each lost their first- round singles matchups and will continue to compete in each group. Willems will play Matt Sweet (Weber State) and Archer will play Dylan Harlow from Utah State. Both matches are scheduled for 11.30 a.m. tomorrow. Lee won't see singles action on Friday as he receives a bye.
Although the weather forced matches to be moved indoors to the Eccles Tennis Center today, all of Friday's matches are scheduled for outdoor competition at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy. Play is set to begin at 9 a.m.
