OJAI, Calif. - The seventh-seeded University of Utah men's tennis team (13-12) suffered a 4-2 loss to third-seeded and No. 10 Stanford (17-7) Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the Pac-12 Championships at Libbey Park.
In doubles play, Stanford quickly captured the doubles point from the Nos. 1 and 2 positions. Senior Benito Suriano and junior Dmytro Mamedov dropped an 8-2 decision to Stanford's Ryan Thacher and Denis Lin from the top spot. Sophomore Alejandro Medinilla and freshman Ace Matias then fell 8-6 at the second slot to Bradley Klahn and John Morrissey, giving the Cardinal the doubles point.
The score then became 2-0 when Suriano was defeated by No. 36 Klahn at the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 6-2. 64th-ranked Freshman Slim Hamza then downed No. 113 Matt Kandath, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 3 position, making the score 2-1.
Medinilla then suffered a hard-fought 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 loss to Robert Stineman at the No. 6 slot, putting the Cardinal up 3-1. Utah then closed in on Stanford's lead when Mamedov netted his second individual upset over a nationally ranked opponent this season, topping 27th-ranked Thacher, 7-5, 6-2, from the No. 2 position to make the score 3-2.
The Utes were ultimately unable to clinch another match and Stanford saw its fourth point from the No. 5 spot. Despite capturing a 3-6 victory in the first set, Lane dropped the second and third sets, 7-6(4), 6-0, respectively, falling to Daniel Ho and making the final score 4-2.
