OJAI, Calif. - The seventh-seeded University of Utah men's tennis team topped No. 70 and sixth-seeded Oregon, 4-0, during round one of the Pac-12 Championships Wednesday at Libbey Park. The Utes secured the doubles point and went on to sweep in singles play. Freshman Rafael Davidian managed to clinch the match for Utah in singles with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Oregon's Daniel Sardu from the No. 4 position.
"I'm very proud of the guys today," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "They battled very hard to earn our first ever Pac-12 tournament victory and a win over a ranked opponent."
Sophomore Devin Lane and freshman Slim Hamza then netted an 8-6 victory over Aaron Clissold and Daniel Sardu at the No. 3 spot, setting up sophomore Alejandro Medinilla and freshman Ace Matias to clinch the doubles point. Medinilla and Matias then topped Jose Izquierdo and Alex Rovello, 8-6, at the No. 2 slot, putting the Utes up 1-0.
No. 64 Hamza quickly put the Utes up 2-0 in singles play with a 7-6(3), 6-1 victory over Mullen at the No. 3 position. Suriano then bested Cambier at the No. 1 spot, 7-6(1), 6-4, making the score 3-0 and setting up Davidian for the match deciding point. Davidian then earned Utah's fourth point from the No. 4 singles slot.
Seventh-seeded Utah will face No. 10 third-seeded Stanford Thursday at 2 p.m. at Libbey Park.
