Sophomore Slim Hamza captured an upset and Utah's point in singles play.

LOS ANGELES - The 75th-ranked University of Utah men's tennis team (11-8, 1-2 Pac-12) was defeated by the second-ranked UCLA Bruins (17-1, 3-0 Pac-12) Friday, by a score of 6-1, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Sophomore Slim Hamza upset 19th-ranked Adrien Puget in singles play to capture Utah's point.
In doubles play, Hamza and junior Devin Lane fell to No. 60 Marcos Giron and Dennis Novikov at the top spot, 8-1, while junior Ben Tasevac and sophomore Cedric Willems were defeated by Alex Brigham and Dennis Mkrtchian at the third slot, 8-2, giving the Bruins the doulbes point.
In singles action, the score quickly became 2-0 in favor of UCLA when Mamedov was dispatched by 14th-ranked Giron at the No. 1 spot, 6-0, 6-1. Lane then fell to No. 114 Clay Thompson, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 4 position.
The Bruins then saw their match clinching point at 4-0 from the No. 5 slot as Willems was bested by Karue Sell, 6-1, 7-5.
After taking the first set, 4-6 at the No. 3 spot, Medinilla was unable to clinch the second and third sets, falling 7-5, (10-6) to No. 57 Mkrtchian, putting UCLA up 5-0.
At the sixth slot, Tasevac dropped a 7-6(5), 6-3 decision to Maxime Tabatruong, making the score 6-0 in favor of UCLA.
Hamza then captured Utah's point in a 7-5, 6-4 upset over 19th-ranked Puget at the No. 2 spot, making the final score 6-1.
The 75th-ranked Utes are slated to take on No. 3 USC Saturday at Marks Stadium at 12 p.m. MT.
