SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (67) finished their weekend competition on Saturday with a 7-0 sweep over Utah State. After a break in between their two matches, the Utes came back refreshed and ready to defend their home courts and slam out wins in every singles and doubles match.
Some of Saturday's highlights include an 8-0 domination in doubles play by Wes Hancock and Timmy Allin. The Ute duo played a high level match over Mike Banks and Matt Searle from the Aggies squad for the win.
In singles play, Zach Ganger shut down Jakob Asplund at 6-0, 6-2 at the top spot for the Utes. Miron Mann recovered after falling to Fabio Mancarella from Weber State (3-6, 6-3, (10-6)) earlier on Saturday. The Ute took on Oscar Ericsson from the Aggies for a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 slot.
Jason Smits faced Jonas Tyden at the No. 4 slot for a 6-1, 6-2 victory. At the No. 6 slot, Amit Maharaj stepped in to face Searle from the Aggies squad. The Ute played straight sets for a solid 6-1, 6-1 win.
"Playing a double header is physically and mentally draining, especially when you play two in-state rivals. Our guys did a really good job of staying focused and taking care of business. Utah State gave BYU a good scare the other day, so it was good to see how well our guys did," said assistant coach Roeland Brateanu. "With a match already on our legs from earlier today, you always wonder how some guys will respond. All of our guys did a great job of fighting through some fatigue and little pains. Hopefully we can carry this momentum on into this week's preparation for the showdown with Boise State next weekend!"
