SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team lost its season opener to Northwestern University on Saturday in the Eccles Tennis Center.
The Utes fared well in doubles competition but did not pick up any wins. Senior Roeland Brateanu and freshman Miron Mann lost to Chuck Perrin and Matt Christian (8-6) at the No. 1 spot. Utah sophomore Tomasz Grzyb teamed up with freshman Jason Yap at the No. 2 but fell to Northwestern's Tommy Hanus and Justin Hoevler (8-4). Freshmen Dantley Young and Ryan Scott were defeated by Christian Tempre and Adam Schaechterle at the No. 3 spot (8-3).
In singles action, Mann fought well at the No. 4 position and crushed Wildcat Willy Lock (6-4, 6-4) to earn Utah's only point. After a long battle, Brateanu fell to Perrin (6-7,7-6, 7-5) in the tie breaker at the No.1 spot. Northwestern continued to defeat Utah at the top of the lineup when Hanus downed Gryzb (6-3, 6-4) at the No. 2 and Tempre beat Yap (6-3, 6-1) at the No. 3 spot. The bottom of Utah's lineup felt the same sting when Young lost to Friedland (7-6, 6-4) at the No. 5. Scott played at the No. 6 and fought it out but eventually fell to Wahla (6-3, 3-6, 6-2) in the tie breaker.
Assistant coach Graeme Cox comments on the match."We are disappointed at the result of tonights match. Northwestern is a good team who showed us how to come in and play well in a hostile environment."
"The players and coaching staff want to thank the extremely boisterous crowd that supported us this evening and we hope for more of the same support at the rest of our home matches this year. It makes a big difference to the team to have that level of energy coming from the crowd."
"As a team we need to commit to what we work on in practice and execute it better on match days. We started four freshman tonight so it was a learning experience for them on how to be disciplined enough to take what they learn on the practice court and use it in a match."
